Local search engine optimization (SEO) is the best way to increase the reach of your local business online. A higher ranking on search engine results for local products and services guarantees increased sales. Here are some basic local SEO tips to help in your marketing efforts.
Get Listed on Local Directories
Submit your website to local directories like your local Better Business Bureau and chamber of commerce, as well as to commercial directories that cater to local markets, directories like CitySearch and True Local. Google Local Business Center and Yahoo! offers free local listings. Something that you should definitely take advantage of, as most of your potential local clients usually begin their search for your products and services through one of the three major online search engines.
Leveraging Domain Trust
When you first set up a business domain online, it takes a while to generate trust with the major search engines so that you show up near the top of the search results pages. In the mean time, however you can take advantage of the domain trust of established local, industry websites by creating a sub domain with them. This will gain your business exposure. If you link to your main site in the external domains, you can also increase traffic to your website and thus help it gain more trust with Google and the other big search engines.
Make Your Address Visible
Your customers should never have a very hard time finding where you are. List your actual business address prominently on your main home page and on all other pages, if possible.
Multiple Markets
When catering to multiple local markets, make sure that you compose a unique landing page for each of the towns your targeting. If a potentially interested visitor lands on a site that lists several towns in the same page, they won’t consider it as locally relevant as a web page that caters to only one town. Los Angeles SEO services on it’s own specifically will accquire many more customers than without the local page.
PPC
Pay-per-click ad campaigns are a great way to test out keywords while you prepare for a bigger, local SEO campaign. PPC ads inexpensive and do, at least temporarily, increase your traffic significantly. If you’re targeting multiple local markets, create a different PPC ad for each one.

marketing options for a computer repair business?
I am currently an I.T student at university and have been working in a hospital I.T department solving user problems. I am considering opening a repair business in my spare time where I would make house calls. I have ideas for website, phone and all that but I am not sure about how to get the word out. I am thinking I will need to target local customers but am unsure how or which methods of advertising would be best. Any help in this area would be great or if you have any other tips for the business too. Thanks!

Hi there,
If I were you I would try the yellow pages or the yell.com and the local news paper as well has distributing some leaflets in your area.
Good luck

some things that i have seen that are small but have nonetheless worked:
-have small (but nice) signs made to put up at major intersections where you live

-most local libraries have bulletin boards that allow people to advertise their businesses/services. you could put a flyer up explaining what you do, and have the tear-off contact things at the bottom with your information.
-get the word out to your friends, classmates, etc. if you start by fixing the computers of people you personally know, they will pass the word along to other people they know who might be having cpu problems (provided that the service is good).
i hope this helped some, and good luck!

Several ideas come to mind:
Get vinyl lettering for the side or rear window of your car – less than $50 and you advertise everywhere you go
Join the local Chamber of Commerce and attend the networking functions – two computer repair guys regularly attend ours
start with the University population – tell your friends and profs about your service, put up flyers in the laundry rooms, maybe put an ad in the student newspaper
be aware that some towns have restrictions about placing flyers at intersections – this can get you in trouble
